Olson welcomes new Oregon ranking of the states

Thursday, October 9, 2014, Soldotna, Alaska –Representative Kurt Olson today welcomed recent news that reforms his House Labor & Commerce Committee sponsored and worked to pass into law have made strides in lowering rates and moved Alaska from the top of premium rate rankings.

“It’s great to see our Workers’ Compensation premium rates moving in the right direction,” Olson, R-Soldotna/Kenai, said. “We’re continuing to look at ways to move Alaska even further down the chart and get workers treatment needed to get them back to work and our businesses humming.”

The State of Oregon has just published their 2014 Workers’ Compensation Premium Rate Ranking Survey. For the first time in almost a decade Alaska has dropped from Number 1 to Number 5 with California, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York now topping the chart.

The study is produced every two years, and reflects the impact of four years of workers’ compensation legislation sponsored by the House Labor & Commerce Committee.

It does not include anticipated reductions in Workers compensation rates due to two House Labor & Commerce bills signed by Governor Parnell this year – HB 316 and HB141.

“The past four years of legislation have been a collaborative effort between the House Labor & Commerce Committee, The Department of Labor, and the Division of Insurance, the Workers Compensation Board, WCCA and stakeholders from a number of unions, insurers, and medical providers. We should see more dramatic rate reductions within the next twelve months” Olson said.

“Without all of the impacted parties and stakeholder being willing to sit down at the table and trying to make meaningful reform happen, this never would have worked.”
